The weekend’s Boxing came from Manchester where Derek “Del Boy” Chisora was up against Otto Wallin in what was named “The Last Dance”. The British heavyweight was a slight favourite with non UK casinos and obliged the odds with a home soil victory, the 41 year old came into the contest with 48 fights to his name but 13 defeats.
He had a reputation as a game fighter as although he was coming into this clash as the underdog he controlled the fight from the beginning. In the third round the Brit made a series of heavy connections and Wllin looked too sluggish to cope, though in the fifth he imposed a cut above the right eye of Chisora from a clash of heads.
The referee requested some extra attention from Chisora’s team as the blood was pouring from the gash in the sixth round but in the seventh Chisora got the crowd to their feet landing a handful of flows for which it was only the bell that intervened saving Wallin. It was the same in the ninth round as Wallin was sent flying into the corner as he hit the canvas but he recovered quickly and rode out the following onslaught from Del Boy as the fight was now heading into the Championship rounds.
The home ground got behind Chisora for the remainder and it was the Brit that controlled the rest of the bout with measured aggression against Wallin who offered little in return. In the dying seconds Wallin hit the canvas once more.
The judges awarded the bout to Derek Chisora by unanimous decision 117-109, 114-112, 116-110 the performance might have been the most rousing performance of his career so far. The victory earned the chance to face fellow heavyweight Daniel Dubois in a British showdown as this was a IBF eliminator for the belt. Dubois has an upcoming fight against Joseph Parker to attend too but many still feel Chisora has more to give so will fight fifty be the Final Dance!?

There was a shock on the undercard as Nathan Heaney who might have had his final fight, the well supported fighter from Stoke was coming into this bout with a draw and then a loss to fellow Brit Brad Pauls. The 35 year old experienced man started well but he was caught with a heavy punch in the seventh round where he was down and clearly hurt.
The Brit was given further time to have his gum shield put back in but Sofiane Khati who came into this fight with five wins from his last six bouts came back in after the restart to force a stoppage. This will be a hard road back for Heaney so this might have been the last time we have seen him in the ring.
Next week we have another great night of Boxing in Manchester so keep your eyes peeled for your Boxing news.
