After our preview of the Novice Hurdle market moves we will now look at the Novice Chase races where there were a couple of contenders that won at the Dublin Racing Festival at the weekend. Firstly it was Majborough who cemented his place for March when taking the Irish Arkle Novice Chase on Saturday at Leopardstown, the JP McManus owned 5yo jumped novicey on occasions but showed a great engine to win by 9 lengths from Touch Me Not.
The gelding will need to brush up on his jumping as the Cheltenham fences aren’t forgiving but he has course and distance form having won last season’s Triumph Novice Hurdle. He has the scope and many will feel he can put it up to the Nicky Henderson trained Sir Gino.
L’Eau du Sud trained by Dan Skelton missed a Graded race at Windsor a couple of weeks ago but this Grade 1 winning Novice Chaser might have another run before the festival in six weeks time.
Betting for the Arkle Novice Chase(Ante Post Rules Apply):
Non UK Casinos: Sir Gino 4/5, Majborough 2/1, L’Eau du Sud 14/1, Inthepocket 20/1 and its 20/1 Bar.
Casinos Not on Gamban: Sir Gino 8/11, Majborough 21/10, L’Eau du Sud 14/1, Inthepocket 20/1 and its 20/1 Bar.
The other Novice Chase race is the Brown Advisory ran over 3m, the Willie Mullins trained Ballyburn cemented his place at the head of the market when taking the step up in distance winning the 2m 6f Ladbrokes Novice Chase by 5 lengths beating Croke Park and stable mate Impaire Et Passe a further 5 ½ lengths back in 3rd.
The 7yo Ballyburn who was beaten by Sir Gino over 2m last time showed his class when briefly headed at the last to go away at the finish showing there’s no problem with the distance.
It’s yet to be known if we will see Dancing City in the race also as the Willie Mullins 8yo gelding likes give in the ground. Jango Baie of Nicky Henderson’s was beaten at Sandown just failed to take the Virgin Scilly Isles Novice Chase losing by a short head from Handstands but this 6yo will be aimed at the 3 miles contest at Cheltenham having already won at the course.
Ballyburn has easily the best hurdle form having won the 2m 5f Grade 1 Novice at last year’s Cheltenham meeting so will no doubt take all the beating there this time around.
The Jukebox Man will miss the rest of the season Ben Pauling reported, this exciting 7yo looked a very exciting Novice Chaser having won the Kauto Star Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day but hopefully we will see him next year at Cheltenham.
