It doesn’t seem five minutes ago it was the start of the off season but with only two weeks away till the main draw of the Australian Open Tennis we thought it was a great idea to give you a preview of the candidates for the Women’s Singles competition.
What better place to start than with World No 1 Aryna Sabalenka. The Belarusian looks to make it three Australian Open singles titles on the bounce having won 2023 and 2024 respectfully. The 26 year old won four titles in 2024 taking the US Open, WTA Cincinnati, WTA Wuhan as well as this title in Melbourne.
Last year’s contest saw her not drop a single set on her way to victory, eventually winning the final 6-0 6-3 against Rybakina. She will be very popular for punters with her astounding hard court record.
Iga Swiatek, currently ranked No 2 didn’t get any further than last year’s third round in Melbourne where she made a shock exit to Linda Noskova in three sets. The 23 year old from Poland will look to massively improve that this time around. In 2024 she picked up titles in Doha, Indian Wells, Madrid, Rome and also The French Open at Roland Garros. Currently towards the top end of the market we expect a good run for your money.
American youngster Coco Gauff, only 20 years old, has made a tremendous start to her career on tour winning three titles in 2024 in Auckland, Beijing and The Masters Cup. Last season she managed to get to the Semi-final in Melbourne losing to eventual winner Sabalenka 6-7 4-6. Gauff currently leads Sabalenka 5-4 in head to heads so will look to gain her revenge in the first slam of the season.
There are four British players with main draw entries in the women’s singles. Katie Boulter will be seeded in Melbourne this year after a great season in 2024 winning two WTA titles (San Diego and Nottingham) and making another final in Hong Kong. She got her season off to a flyer last term so will look to do so in the Australian Open this time around.
Emma Raducanu has made the second round in each of her last three seasons so will hope to better that in 2025 first major. After making the fourth round at Wimbledon, Raducanu finished her season going unbeaten in Great Britain’s Billie Jean Cup run to the semi-finals.
Sonay Kartal is in the main draw for the first time having won her first title in Monastir towards the end of 2024. Jodie Burrage is on protected ranking, but is in impressive form having won the W100 Dubai her biggest title to date.
Other British candidates looking to make it past the qualifying rounds for the Australian Open are Harriet Dart, Heather Watson, Francesca Jones and Lily Miyazaki.
