Saturday 8th February Horse Racing Preview 

This Saturday we have televised action from Newbury and Warwick to preview for you racing fans, the first we will look further into is the William Hill Denman Chase at Newbury run over 2m 7f. Heading the entries is the Paul Nicholls Bravemansgame, you could argue that this now 10yo has had his best days but he will be taking a drop in grade to Grade 2 event here. 

He has won a King George and also this race in 2022 but this season he started off coming runner up in the Charlie Hall at Wetherby before coming third in the Betfair Chase at Haydock and then on Boxing Day he came a disappointing 8th in the King George at Kempton where he looked to be never travelling. This race will be much calmer waters for this gelding so can he show his younger rivals he still has his talent?

His main rivals looks to be Djelo for Venita Williams, this 7yo gelding won the Peterborough Chase at Huntingdon beating some above average horses in Protektorat and Ginny’s Destiny but Protektorat reversed the form at Windsor over an extra 2f. He did pull hard in that race so maybe that’s his excuse. He was placed at the Cheltenham festival last season coming 3rd in the Turners Novice Chase over two and a half miles so he certainly has ability. 

The last horse we will look at in this race is Hitman who is another trained by Paul Nicholls, this 9yo has come runner up in both his races this season at Aintree and Ascot which were both good handicaps. He has course and distance form here as he came second in this race in 2024 to Shishkin and if he was to line up again he would certainly run a big race for joint owner Sir Alex Ferguson. Due off 2.25pm Live on ITV.

The other race we will look into at Newbury is the William Hill Game Spirit Chase run over 2m 1/2f. A noticeable entry here is Sir Gino trained by Nicky Henderson, this 5yo started his season off winning the Fighting Fifth Grade 1 hurdle at Newcastle before making the switch to the larger obstacles at Kempton beating Ballyburn over 2m. He jumped fantastically there and this looks to be another prep run before the Arkle at Cheltenham in March. 

One of the horses looking to take advantage of any mistakes is Matata trained by Nigel Twiston-Davies, this 7yo gelding won at Windsor last month winning a handicap impressively by ten lengths. That was his second victory of the season having won a handicap chase on the Greatwood Hurdle day at Cheltenham in November also. This would be a step up in grade but he’s certainly in good form.

The now old Edwardstown looks set to run in this also, Alan King’s 11yo gelding won this race in 2024 and will come into this race on the back of coming 3rd to Jonbon and Energumene in the Clarence House Chase which was a Grade 1 affair. He drops slightly in grade here but will be up Jonbon’s younger stablemate here. He will run his race if getting round as he is prone to hit the deck. Due off at 3.32pm Live on ITV.
