With ITV also showing three races from Haydock Park we are going to preview two of the races for you. The first being the 1.55pm Sky Bet Supreme Trial Rossington Main Novice Hurdle which is a Grade 2 event over just short of two miles.
Heading the entries is Thats Nice for Nicky Henderson this point to point recruit was gambled as if defeat was out the question when winning on debut at Warwick in a mare novice hurdle. She did it with the minimum of fuss barely coming off the bridle. That couldn’t be said on her second outing when she was last of four in a novice hurdle at Cheltenham. She went odds on fav but weakened quickly before two out for which the trainer could offer no explanation for its poor run. It’s obviously too early to write this mare off but she has got something to prove now racing against not only her sex.
Next in the entries is Royal Infantry who’s trained by Dan Skelton, this 6yo gelding has won two from two over hurdles winning his maiden at Chepstow before winning an introductory hurdle at this track at the beginning of December. The trainer holds this horse in high regard after an above average Bumper campaign last season and his long term target looks to be the Supreme Novice Hurdle.
Derryhassen Paddy from the Lucinda Russell yard is an unexposed horse entered, this 6yo gelding won his bumper at Ayr in February before winning his maiden hurdle at Uttoxeter really finishing strong to the line when shaken up after the final hurdle. We don’t know the depth of the race but this gelding looks a nice prospect for the future. He is also entered for a 3m race at Windsor on Friday so it will be interesting which route they go down.

The other race we are looking at is the 2.30pm which is the Sky Bet Peter Marsh Handicap Chase run over 3m 2f. This is a real test of stamina especially with the rain they’ve had up there. Heading the entries is Royal Pagaille for Venetia Williams, this 11yo won the Betfair Chase over course and distance, out staying Grey Dawning and completing back to back wins in the race. He has an entry in the Gold Cup at Cheltenham but a tilt at the Grand National could also be something connections would look at if the ground wasn’t too quick.
Mr Vango trained by Sara Bradstock also is expected to run, this 9yo gelding won the London National at Sandown last month and this out and out stayer has to be respected. He ran in the National Hunt Chase over 4 miles at Cheltenham coming 3rd but ran a rather disappointing effort in the Scottish National, The trainer put it down to the ground. This is another horse who looks to go down the Grand National route later on in the season but staying chases will be the short term aim.
The last one we will look at is Trelawne trained by Kim Bailey and Matt Nicholls, this 9yo gelding won well at this track in November beating the JP horse Iroko by ½ length. He led for the majority of the race and then battled on to take the £26k contest. He went on to come fourth in the Howden Silver Cup at Ascot but a return to Haydock could be the answer but he has got to prove he stays this trip on soft going.
