Wednesday 12th February Champions League Football Preview

We have four games from the Champions League knockout phase on Wednesday evening the early kick off comes from the Jan Breydel Stadium where Club Brugge face Atalanta, Nicky Hayen’s are 2nd in the Belgium Pro League and 6 pts behind leaders Genk with only five games to play. The homeside’s last two games in this competition have been without a win, they drew at home to Juventus (0-0) and then more recently a away defeat to Man City at The Etihad (3-1). 

Brugge do have an unbeaten home record in all competitions that stretches back to 22nd September 2024 so they have got to keep that intact and get a victory in the first leg to have any chance of getting past this phase.

The visitors Atalanta are currently in 3rd of Serie A, Gian Piero Gasperini side came away from the Nou Camp with a 2-2 draw in their last game in the Champions League. They will arrive into this first leg with an emphatic away win in the league to Verona where it ended 0-5. Top scorer Mateo Retegui netted four for his team bringing his tally to 20 goals for the season. The 25yo Italian was bought from Genoa a couple of summers ago and without doubt get interest from other clubs at the end of the season. Next fixture comes from Celtic Park where Celtic welcome Bayern Munich, the last time the two played here was back in 2017 when Celtic came off the worse losing 1-2 and 5-1 on aggregate. The visitors Bayern Munich are 8pts clear at the top of the Bundesliga, Vincent Kompany’s side arrive into this game on the back of four consecutive wins. It started with an away win to Freiburg (1-2) in the league, then a victory at home to Slovan in this competition (3-1), followed by two home victories to Kiel (4-3) and Werder Bremen (3-0) in Bundesliga again.   

Bayern would like to have this tie in control before the return in Germany with top scorer Harry Kane looking to add to his 21 goal tally for the season. It will be a great atmosphere here but who will come out on top? They will arrive into this first leg tie on the back of a 3-0 home victory to Sparta in the league so fans will hope they can back it up with a home win here. 

The visitors Milan are outside the European places in 7th in Serie A, but since their away defeat to Dinamo in this competition they drew in the Milan Derby (1-1), a victory in the Coppa Italia at home to Roma (3-1) and more recently a victory away to Empoli (0-2) in the league. 

Manager Sergio Conceicao will hope to get on the scoresheet here and take an away goal to the San Siro for the second leg. Kick off 8pm.
