This week we had the second leg’s of the two EFL Cup Semi-Finals with four Premier League sides hoping for a place in the Final at Wembley on the 16th March. The first one came from St James Park where Newcastle hosted Arsenal.
Eddie Howe’s Newcastle side were heading into the second leg with a 2-0 advantage from The Emirates so they were much in control of this last four tie, they had lost their last two games at home in the Premiership so some might have been slightly nervous. Arsenal had much of the early possession but it was the Magpies that took the lead in the 19th minute when Jacob Murphy netted. The home side did have a goal disallowed thanks to VAR before that but it ended 1-0 in the first half.
Mikel Arteta’s side came out in the second half having to chase down a three goal deficit on aggregate but it was Anthony Gordon who shut off all hope of a comeback in the 52nd minute when scoring in the bottom left corner. The visitors did make four changes but it wasn’t enough for the Londeners. Newcastle have improved on last year’s EFL Cup Quarter-Final exit to reach to now be within touching distance of some Silverware.
The other Semi-Final came from Anfield where Liverpool were hoping to turn the tie around against Tottenham. Arne Slot’s side lost 1-0 at the Tottenham Hotspurs Stadium after a 86th minute goal from Lucas Bergvall. It took just over the half an hour mark for the deadlock to be broken with Cody Gakpo leveling the tie’s aggregate.
It took just five minutes into the second half for the game to swing in Liverpool’s hands when Mo Salah netted from the penalty spot. Ange Postecoglou made a couple of tactical changes to switch things up but the homeside scored again in the 75th minute when Dominik Szoboszlai netted making it 3-0 on the night. The Reds captain got on the scoresheet to make it 4-0 ten minutes before the end.
The Final of the EFL Cup looks to be a match to experience some attacking football, when the two sides met in the league at St James Park it ended 3-3. Both teams have plenty of talent going forward. Kick off 2.30pm.
