COTT SWANS IN TO MAKE WALES CASE

Swansea hero David ­Cotterill has set his sights on becoming a Wales ­regular after his super show against Preston.


Cotterill, 22, made his Wales debut five years ago but has failed to establish himself in John Toshack’s side.


The former Wigan and Sheffield United man is hoping the move back to his native South Wales will revive his international career.


Cotterill, who moved to Swansea in a £600,000 deal last month, hit a stunning free-kick before setting up Ashley Williams for the second against Preston.


He said: “I want to be a part of the Wales side and that’s one of the reasons I came to Swansea. I’ve had enough of being a bit-part player. I want to be involved on a regular basis.


“I’m desperate to play for my country, but I can only do that if I’m doing well for my club.


“I wasn’t in the manager’s plans at Sheffield United and I was in danger of not getting called up by Wales.

“John Toshack made it clear he wanted me playing week in, week out.”


Cotterill has won 15 caps but has made only one start – against Trinidad and ­Tobago four years ago.


“I spoke to John Toshack when Swansea made their offer and he told me it would be a good move,” he added.

“When the manager of Wales gives you his opinion, you’ve got to take notice.


“The next international is against Sweden at the Liberty Stadium and it would be brilliant to be involved.


“We’ve got a good young squad and I think the next qualifying campaign is ­going to be exciting for us. I want to be a part of it.”


Cotterill netted his second goal for the Swans in the 35th minute, curling his free-kick over the wall.


Just after the break Williams headed home his free-kick and Cotterill left to a standing ovation when he was replaced by Tom Butler.


He said: “We dominated the game from start to finish. I was pleased with my goal.


“We were practising free-kicks on Friday and Tom Butler said I was going to score against Preston, so it was nice to put one in!”
