CAP FITS MIKE

ABOVE: Johnson is injury free
5th November 2009

By Peter White

MANCHESTER City midfielder Michael Johnson has been recalled to the England Under-21 squad 15 months after his last cap.

However, Arsenal duo Theo Walcott and Jack Wilshere have not been included for the European Championship qualifier against Portugal on Saturday week, although they could figure against Lithuania three days later.

Boss Stuart Pearce said: “We’ll be monitoring Jack and Theo’s situations. If they recover a little bit quicker than expected, then we might review the squad. Michael Johnson has had a massive absence from injury for a long, long time, so being in the squad will be a big lift for him.”

The 21-year-old has recovered from a long-term abdominal problem that limited him to eight appearances last term.

SQUAD: Fielding, Loach, McCarthy; Bertrand, Gibbs, Mancienne, Naughton, Richards, Tomkins, Smalling; Cleverley, Cork, Delph, Johnson, Muamba, Rodwell, Rose, Stanislas; Carroll, Hines, Sturridge, Welbeck.
